About Us
Peppy Jay Lena
CD Millennium

Welcome to Perkins Quarter Horses, owned by Danny & Donna Perkins. Home to Peppy Jay Lena and CD Millennium, two of the best bred cow horses east of the Mississippi!

We are situated in the beautiful Bluegrass region of central Kentucky. Our farm is family owned and run and has been in Danny's family for many years. The farm once raised tobacco, corn and cattle, but is now a horse and hay operation.

Our goals are to produce healthy, atheletic animals - with good minds and good temperments and provide quality stallions at reasonable prices and still make a living.

You will also find at our place, weanlings, yearlings and two year old offspring with that same cow breeding for sale at any time. If you're looking for horses with looks, athleticism and intelligence, you've come to the right place!

The pastures are lush and green from March through November in a good year (when it is not too dry). Red clover, blue grass, orchard grass, and fescue make up most of the pastures. We also cultivate two small plots of alfalfa to cut and bale for the brood mares' last 6 to 8 week before delivering foals. Much of our pasture land is not grazed but is used to produce good quality grass hay for winter and dry weather feeding of the stock.

If you would like to schedule a visit to our farm or need more information about our horses; such as extended pedigrees, more pictures, or videos, please contact us below.

CD Olena x Millie Montana

CD Millennium, born in 2000; by CD Olena by Doc O Lena; out of Millie Montana by Montana Doc. Purchased in 2004 from Steve Ross of Stephenville, TX. Humanely euthanized (March 29th, 2008 at the age of 8) due to complications of rabies.

CD was a dream come true for us; we purchased him at a sale in Murfreesburro, TN – he was the best stallion prospect in the sale. At that time, he had a few AQHA points in reining; however, we planned to take him to our trainer, Joe Harper of Russell Springs, KY to show him in working cow horse and NRCHA classes. He became National Champion in Hackamore for NRCHA in 2005; qualified for the NRCHA world show three years in a row; earned his AQHA performance ROM; won numerous other honors in the show pen; and filled our lives for almost four years. He had only two breeding seasons for us – a total of three babies on the ground right now and three more expected this spring of 2008. He had a huge heart and nearly unlimited determination; he loved to cut calves on the wall or out of the herd. CD was built for this job and was a joy to watch. Last fall, Joe started showing him in local cuttings and was very successful in just a few outings. The new KY breeders incentive fund brought prospective breeders out of the woodwork in KY this year; we received several requests for information on breeding to CD as well as to our other stallion, Peppy Jay Lena. I know that several of those kind folks were disappointed and devastated as were we.

Everyone who knew him loved him; he was safe and sane for anyone to get on his back or just to be near. He had such natural talent; he could easily teach his rider. When he came home in 2006 for his first breeding season, it was obvious that he missed Joe’s barn. When we took him back early that summer, anyone could see that he wanted to be in Joe’s show barn and in the show pen with Joe aboard.

CD has taught me to love the breed even more than I did; he has taught me to persevere despite the odds – he did; he has helped me with my patience – I need it still; he taught me that sometimes you must take that chance; and he has provided us with a legacy that we will forever treasure. His time with us seems so brief but his presence in our lives provided richness and color that we won’t forget.
